High Blood Sugar, commonly called 'Sugar' is known as Diabetes Mellitus in medical terminology. It is of 2 types- Type I or IIDM (Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) and Type II or NIDDM (Non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus).

In Ayurveda, it is called 'Madhumeh'. A few ayurvedic scholars believe that diabetes is not madhumeh, but it is 'Ikshumeh'. Both have almost same symptoms with some slight differences according to ayurvedic principles.

Diabetes has become a world-wide problem with India having the most number of diabetics, around 51 million!! So lest it should become an epidemic, quick and effective measures should be taken to prevent and control it.

Controlling diabetes in a natural way is the most effective way as consumption of allopathic medicines would show some adverse effects on the body.

If the disease is diagnosed recently and the blood sugar level is not very high from the normal range, it can be controlled by doing some basic changes in the lifestyle only. First of all, the patient should stop consuming anything that breaks quickly into glucose; like sugar, refined flour, rice, ...
... potatoes, fruits like banana, mango, apple, grapes etc. Citrus fruits, guava and papaya are exceptions.

Patients whose staple diet includes rice should switch to brown rice and those who eat chapatis should mix their wheat flour with chic-pea flour. According to Ayurveda, jaggery does not increase the blood sugar level, so diabetics can use jaggery instead of sugar.

As mentioned, potatoes, sweet potatoes are a strict no-no, but there are a few vegetables which help in reducing the blood-sugar level. Bitter melon or bitter gourd or Karela is a great food to have. It can be had as a routine vegetable, or half a cup of its fresh juice in the morning works wonders. A few other vegetables like Parval, bottle gourd also help in keeping the sugar level in check. There are many ayurvedic herbs with wonderful anti-diabetic properties. All these herbs are mixed in right proportion and made in capsule form as Diabkil Capsules to control blood sugar level naturally.

Physical activity plays a pivotal role in its treatment. Brisk walk and yogic exercises are of a great help. Patient should make it a daily routine to walk for 45 minute- 1 hour in morning and evening. It should be followed by yoga. Dhanurasan, Shalabhasam, Pashchimottanasan, Ardhmatsendriyasan, Halasan show miraculous results. Also, Kapal-bhaati or nadi-shodhan pranayam and Bhastrika pranayam have proved very useful. But yoga and pranayam should always be done under an expert's supervision.

Here is a very important point. Diabetics, who do regular exercise, sometimes their blood sugar level falls very dramatically which can be very dangerous. So, one should always keep something sweet, like a candy with them.

There is a very famous saying in Ayurveda that your best doctor is your kitchen, and diabetes is no exception in this case. Along with diet and exercise, consumption of a few simple herbs in a proper way will make a diabetic live a normal life.

Use of Fenugreek (methi) seeds yields great results. Soak one teaspoon of these seeds in a cup of water overnight. Chew and eat them next morning, and also drink the remaining water. This is a traditionally tried-n-tested formula for diabetes. Gastritis patients should avoid this.

Take 10 neem leaves, 10 tulsi leaves, and 1 teaspoon of jamun-seed powder. Mix them with 100 ml of water and boil it. When water remains half, filter it, add jaggery and drink this decoction slowly. This is another very useful formula to get rid of this 'sweet disease'.

If not treated on time, diabetes can lead to severe chronic diseases and it affects almost all the systems of the body. One only needs to take some dietary measures, be physically active and make full use of the spices available in one's kitchen.
