If you’re looking for a gift, you probably have a few must-haves on your list. A gift should be useful to the person, long lasting, well made, affordable and most importantly timeless. There’s simply no better way to fit the bill than with Tahitian pearls!
If you’re going to purchase a Tahitian pearl necklace as a gift or for yourself, you need to know what you’re looking for. It’s very easy to make a few wrong turns and end up with a badly mismatched string. This article will share a few basic tips that will help you differentiate genuine pearls from fake ones. First let’s learn a little bit about these natural wonders.
These pearls are named after the island of Tahiti. They are created by native black-lipped oysters and are exquisite. Tahitian pearls come in a wide range of shades and colors, including black, grey, silver, blue, green-black, brown, purple, and many others. A good rule of thumb is to pick out colors that ...
... go well with the intended wearer’s skin tone. For example, if you have a dark complexion, purple or blue Tahitian pearl earrings will likely compliment it quite nicely.
Pearls can come in different colors, even though they are produced by the same species of oyster. This variation depends on a number of factors, such as the thickness of the nacre layer, and the temperature of the sea. In other words, the environment in which an oyster lives plays a large role in shaping a pearl. When selecting pearls, it’s important to consider two important points:

• Thickness: The breadth of the nacre of a Tahitian pearl is 0.8mm. Any pearl which does not meet this requirement should be rejected.
• Color: Due to rarity, a pearl’s color greatly influences its value. Individual market values can vary greatly, so timely research is required.
For example, the black Tahitian bead is known as the queen of pearls. When quality requirements are met, they become some of the most expensive pearls in the world. The rich and famous are known to purchase exquisite black Tahitian pearl rings or necklaces.
The grading system for judging a pearl’s quality is similar to that used for judging diamonds. There are 4 grades, A, B, C and D, based on a pearl’s surface. A-grade pearls are flawless, without any visible spots or bumps. B-grade pearls exhibit slight imperfections and are less expensive. Beads with bumps, scratches, discolorations and spots are considered low-grade.
The body test is the key for determining a true top-quality pearl from a fake. Real pearls match their temperature to that of your body, while fake ones do not. When you first touch a genuine pearl, it will feel cool to the touch. However, this contrast is far less noticeable in a fake.
By following these tips you’ll be sure to pick out only true high quality pearls.
