Nainital is for many the chosen holiday destination. Whether you decide to drive down from Dehradun or arrive from Kathgodam which is the railhead, the journey to Nainital will not fail to please. Winding roads go along cool pine forests bringing succour to those coming from hot cities below. Waiting for you are Nainital hotels which are the last word in comfort and hospitality.
The Legends behind the Town
Like many hill towns in Uttarakhand, Nainital also has its share of Hindu legends associated with it. The lake itself is said to have been formed when three Hindu sages transferred water magically from the lake Mansarovar to slake their thirst. Another legend links the eye shaped lake to Parvati’s left eye. This resort town is said to have been the scene of Shiva’s cosmic dance.
The origins of Nainital as we know it is more recent. Its potential was discovered by a businessman by the name of P. Barron who was so mesmerized by its beauty when he saw it that he decided to settle down there. Later it was popularised by the British ...
... residents who found it convenient to come here in summer when it became too hot in the plains. Nainital tour packages now give tourists from all over India the opportunity to visit this beautiful town.
Nainital is ringed by lakes that were formed by glaciers that retreated many eons ago. These lake areas are now being developed as new towns as Nainital finds it difficult to cope with the influx of tourists in summer. Naukutchiatal and Bhimtal are such new areas. The city of Nainital has much to offer off-season tourists too. One can choose an attractive Nainital holiday package which will be less expensive than the summer offers.
Once here, the young crowd find the noisy restaurants more to their taste but for the elderly there are quiet lanes and trails that lead out of the town. The Governor’s official residence with its gardens is open to the public. The Aryabhatta Observatory and the Zoo are popular points of interest for visitors. One can see good views of the snow-clad peaks of the Himalayas from certain vantage points.
From Nainital one can go on treks that are of moderate difficulty. For bird watchers this is paradise as the forests are full of birds. Wild flowers too bloom in summer and fruit ripens on trees in autumn. Some of the mountain streams have trout that sparkle in rainbow colours. Nainital has something for all.
