An electronic or digital book is not a kind of WORD file that you are familiar with. Its more like a website and need an ereader to read them. There are various recognized format of Ebooks but generally people prefer format that works on most of devices. To most of the people only PDF is the only format known. You will not find every title in one particular format but with the help of convertor you can convert it into any format you want.

PDF
PDF is the most recognized ebooks format that is globally used. Adobe reader recognizes portable document format (PDF) format. Other than improved viewing quality, PDF also simplified manipulation of 3D graphics.

Mobipocket
Mobipocket is one of the oldest and versatile format available for Ebooks. In 2005, Amazon purchased Mobipacket to use with Kindle. It is based on open ebook specification. Epub
ePub or electronic publication is a free and widely used format based on XHTML 1.1. It is also from one of those formats based on open ebook specification. Other than CSS styling and word wrap, it offers various features like vector images. You can find free epub ebooks online.

Microsoft LIT
Its a freeware Microsoft reader program mainly for Windows and Pocket PC. Since Microsoft reader is no longer available but you still find .lit extension, you can still enjoy reading them after converting to another format.
