Dharamshala is well known for its serene beauty and the variety of tourist places and excursion options around the town. Nested in the Dhauladhar range, this small hill resort will never disappoint any vacationer. Best suited for a peaceful holiday in the hills, this town has many things on offer. Here are a few excursion options when you are in Dharamshala:

Dal: A serene picnic spot, this lake shares its name with the iconic Dal Lake in Srinagar. Though it is not as massive as its namesake, Dal is a great place to visit when you are in Dharamshala.
St. Juhn's Church: In the wilderness between McLeodganj and Forsythganj is located this charming stone church of St. John. Just 8km from Dharamshala, this place is a must visit for its historical value.
McLeodganj: Also known as Little Khasa, Mcleodganj is known for being the temporary residence of his holiness Dalai Lama. The Tibetan government has been living here in exile for over three decades now. McLeodganj is also famous for its impressive monastery that houses life size figures of Padmasambhava, Avalokteshwara and Lord Buddha. A host of Tibetan handicrafts ...

Dharamkot: Situated 11km away from Dharamshala, this picnic spot offers a fine view of the Dauladhar range and the Kangra Valley.
Triund: Triund is located at the root of Dauladhar Range and 17km away from Dharamshala. The snowline starts just 5km away from Triund. Triund serves as a popular trek route.
Kareri: Located 22km away from Dharamshala, Kareri is yet another fine getaway destination near the hill resort. The Kareri Lake is 13km further and is a great picnic destination.
Chinmaya Tapovan: this ashram complex was set up by Late Swami Chinmaya, a well noted exponent of Gita. This complex is located just 10km away from Dharamshala right on the banks of Bindu Saras, a rivulet. The complex is famous for a 9m tall image of Lord Hanuman and the magnificent Raghunath temple.
Masrur: Located just 13km from Dharamshala, this monolithic temple is very similar to the famous rock temples of Ellora. This is perhaps the only temple carved out from a live rock in the entire North Indian region.
Tilokpur: This cave temple located 41km from Dharamshala is dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Sujanpur Tira: Well known for its historical value, Sujanpur Tira is located 80km from Dharamshala and with an early start is a day's excursion from Dharmshala. The town is famous for its fort, temples and wall paintings, each one carrying great historical value.
