The days of ‘trusted’, ‘part of the family’, ‘from the days of my grandparents’, ‘seen me from my diaper days’ are a story of the past. Domestic helpers or servants today, in the metros and increasingly in the aspiring-to-be-metros is transient, temperamental, short in supply and short-termed. With inflation & commerce driving the world, servants and domestic helpers too look for more lucrative avenues to earn the fast dough.

This ‘gold-rush’ for better paying jobs entices the domestic help populace to leave the ‘economically backward’ regions of Jharkhand, Bihar, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam & Nepal for the affluence and glitter of Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida and other such areas. While this is not an unknown or a new trend; neither is the trend ‘undesirable’ with the demand for such help always being more than the supply; we, as the eventual employer have to ensure we know who we allow into our homes.

We pay premiums on our life & health insurance, we insure our ‘homes’ and ‘cars’ etc, we buy ‘travel’ insurance….. so is it not but natural that we ensure that those ...

What can be ‘ensured’ is that the person has no criminal past, has actually resided/resides where he/she claim to and that their past employers have nothing damning or negative to share. Verification is a process which ‘ensures’ that whatever the domestic help is appearing/claiming is true. What verification cannot ‘ensure’ is that this person will never in future commit a crime or be found ‘unsuitable’ for employing. However, even if the person does commit a first in crime, the fact that he/she has been verified will allow you or the law to take quick recourse.

We have read of instances when a maid has kidnapped a child of the employers for any reason [miffed at low/no salary; being reprimanded; for heavy ransom]; and if the maid is ‘unregistered’ with the police or is ‘unverified’; the time taken to trace the maid and/or the kidnapped child will only add to the agony of the affected family.
Registering the maid with the police and verifying the past details through a professional service ensures traceability in case of an untoward incident. And importantly verification will also ensure the maid will think more than once before committing a crime of any nature as she knows she can be traced.

There is lack of data on what percentage of domestic help commit crimes in India; but what is evident is the increase in these instances. What if you were one of the ‘increase’ in instances of this sort? As they say, better to be safe than sorry. Verify, ensure and be safe.
