There’s absolutely no question that hardwood floors look great. However, when you start talking to home remodeling and repair companies about having hardwood flooring installed or looking around at the many choices available, it’s easy to be confused by the enormous number of choices. Which type of hardwood flooring is best for your home? It all depends on your personal tastes as well as what kind of household you have, but there are a few things that you’ll want to keep in mind as you look for hardwood flooring material for your home improvement project.

Color

Obviously, color matters when it comes to your flooring. The color should go with the kind of décor that you have in your home or that you want to create. If your home is or will be decorated in more traditional styles, then something a little darker like walnut or cherry might be a good choice. Their deeper colors lend a more formal feel to the rooms where they are installed. However, if you want a more casual and contemporary look, then you might want to go with a lighter colored wood like hickory or oak. Their lighter colors give rooms a ...
... lighter and more comfortable feel.

Grain

The grain of the wood is something else that you’ll want to think about before having a home remodeling and repair service come out to install new flooring. Depending on the type of wood, the grain may be curled, wavy, straight or spiral – and the grain can be tight or loose. If you’d prefer a tighter grain, then darker woods like cherry, walnut or red birch might be the right choice. For a looser pattern, you can opt for ash or oak; and if you want something with a tight grain and a knotty texture in a medium color, hickory may be what you’ve been looking for.

Width

Another option that you’ll need to think about before you make a decision about this home improvement project is how wide you want the planks to be in your new wood flooring. You can find planks as narrow as 2” and as wide as 7” (or even wider), but you may not be sure whether narrower or wider planks will look good once they’re installed. In general, the planks used for hardwood flooring are 2” or 3” wide, but if you want to go for a rustic look, wider planks are the way to go. Wide planks also give the room where they are installed the illusion of being larger, so if you’re thinking of installing new hardwood flooring in a smaller room, you may want to keep this in mind.

New Or Reclaimed Wood?

Reclaimed wood offers ecologically minded homeowners a green-friendly option and one which can be quite attractive at that. Reclaimed wood may be from old buildings, telephone poles or other sources, but can give rooms a rustic, weathered feel which is perfect for a den, family room or anywhere else that you want to relax. Many home remodeling and repair companies which handle hardwood flooring will be able to offer this to you, so be sure to ask if reclaimed wood flooring is something you’re thinking about having installed in your home.
