The Indi-pop King!
There is not a single Indian to be found who has not heard of Daler Mehndi. He has dominated the Indian pop culture over the last few decades, and the way he is still evolving it is likely that he is going to do so for the decades to come. He was the first person who made the then-regional Punjabi music popular across the world, giving birth to the entire genre of Indi-pop music. No doubt he is deemed to be a God in the Punjabi rock culture as Punjabi Artist.
He emerged in the mid-90s, with his much popular ‘Bolo Ta Ra Ra’. This album went on to break records and created the genre of Indi-pop music. Basically a classically trained singer, he is highly regarded for the intellectual depth which his work always has. Rabbabi, another genre that he gifted the music world is actually a mixture of ghazals, thumri, pop, Sufi and bhangra, mixed with rock. And this music has given birth to an entire group of new-age Indian Sufi singers and Punjabi pop stars .
His fully Indian concerts are a treat to the eyes and ears, all across the world. He has performed in USA, Canada, Australia, UK, ...
... Belgium, West Indies, New Zealand, Pakistan, Hong Kong, East Africa, Singapore, Malaysia, Bahrain, Oman, Europe, UAE etc. And everywhere he has been received with the awe and respect which he thoroughly deserves.
Those highly electric performances coupled with his signature dhol beats are hugely popular. But with the entrepreneur that he is, there is another important side to his persona. He is deeply religious and respectful of the all-powerful Almighty, and engages himself in philanthropic works whenever he can.
His new album is Rajan Ke Raja, whose songs are authored by none other than Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, and composed by Daler Mehndi. Self-written and composed, Bismillah is another example of the versatility he possesses. No doubt he is considered to be among the top Punjabi singers this country has ever produced.
Many are there who have become popular by virtue of a few famous albums, but few have been there who have been able to maintain the status of their music like Daler Mehndi, and how! His website, www.dalermehndi.com shows how a man can lead an accomplished life. He has initiated a go-green drive which started its journey by planting saplings, to make the earth a greener and fitter place to live in.
Those colourful turbans, self-styled regal robes and bright blazers – many have copied his signature style, but COPYING someone is one thing and BEING someone is another completely different thing. No matter how much he is copied, one can never imitate the power-packed performances which only he is known to deliver. Much has been said and written about it, some not so satisfying but one can never neglect his contribution to the Indian music culture.
