An orangery is defined as a conservatory or a greenhouse which was developed basically for the purpose of growing citrus trees. The orangeries were mainly used to keep the citrus trees under cover during the harsh winter season so that these could survive. Once it was established that the orangeries could be used for protecting lime and orange trees, there use was extended to other tender varieties of plants as well as some exotic plants and shrubs.
