Lisbon is blessed as the only European capital located so close to sandy beaches. Although the waters are not as warm as in the south of the country, the Lisbon coast offers beautiful beaches that range from sheltered little coves to miles of dune-backed sands. Most of them are clean and fly the European Union Blue Flag for excellence and are ideal for a refreshing day in the sun.

Lisbonites usually head to the beach every chance they get, on holidays, weekends, or even for an hour or two after work, including in the winter months, if only to gaze out at the sea. Some of the best Beaches in Lisbon are listed below.

Adraga

This near-perfect beach was considered one of Europe's best by The Sunday Times, and ranked number two in The Independent's list of top 10 Portugal beaches. Close to Sintra, and just 15km (9miles) north of Guincho, it is wedged between tall cliffs and has clean blue waters. It is no longer a secret and gets its number of sunbathers, but beyond the cliffs there is plenty of space and seclusion. This unspoiled beauty and seclusion has its ...
... price.

Costa da Caparica

You won't find much seclusion on this coast, but if you want easy access to restaurants, cafes, and public transportation, join the crowds at the vast beaches of Caparica. They are popular and lively in the summer, even at night when most bars stay open until late with music and dancing.

Increasingly popular is Praia da Cabana do Pescador due to its beach bar that offers live music, sofas, massages, and refreshing drinks. Although popular, it never becomes too crowded, as there is plenty of sand and the calmer waves here attract many to the water.

Lagoa de Albufeira

Lagoa de Albufeira is a fine beach with calm waters. Nearby is Praia das Picisnas, a peaceful beach sheltered by pine forests and ideal for long walks by the sea.

Praia Grande

Neighboring Adraga, this "grand beach" offers a number of inexpensive restaurants and bars, and often hosts surfing competitions. You'll find an Olympic-sized pool facing the sea that is open from June to September, and a smaller beach nearby named "Praia Pequena." Less family-oriented than Praia das Maçãs nearby, it attracts a younger and sportier crowd.

Santa Cruz

You won't find many foreign tourists at the beaches around Santa Cruz, a village north of Ericeira. But although the strong waves don't invite much swimming, it is popular with surfers and the beauty of the coastline formed by rocks in the middle of the sea make it a very attractive beach off the beaten path.

Tamariz

Although usually crowded by tourists and locals in the summer, this beach can still be very relaxing. It is overlooked by a castle owned by the royal family of Monaco and has a number of bars, many of which stay open during the summer nights.

Troia

The Troia Peninsula by the Sado Estuary has several superb soft sand beaches. Some areas are highly developed (including an exceptional 18-hole golf course), but along its 18km (11 miles) of coast, you can find untouched sandy beaches lined with dunes and pinewoods. Those searching for peace and quiet can still find it here.
