Apple’s MacBook Pro’s new high-res retina display is causing an epidemic of migraines for web designers. Web designers now have to perform a very delicate balancing act between designing web pages that won’t look ugly on the retina display while also not forgetting the millions and millions of people out there sticking to their old-fashioned standard displays for now.
This is an argument that has been vigorously argued before on the web when the launch of the retina display on the iPad 3 came about. “The new retina display is supposed to make our digital world a prettier place; I like to call this “digital eye candy”. But realistically speaking as far as the rest of the web is concerned (i.e. the non-retina display users) it actually does the opposite. As the retina display comes to the MacBook Pro the problem will only be solidified.
I predict web designers will continue to design mostly for the majority and not the minority.
The crux of the issue is such that the graphics and typography needs to be higher resolution if users of the retina display aren’t going to notice imperfections and pixilation. ...
... But by using these higher resolution images will come longer page-loading times this is a nightmare for web hosting companies and often web designers / developers are also web hosts and provide a one stop shop with all services available in one place. This nightmare can be double trouble for someone without a retina display having to spend that extra time to download the pages without any benefit because of the lower resolution display they won’t even be able to see the extra pixels and extra effort put in.
Is this not the 21st century? Why do we designers have to adopt a one-size-fits-all approach? Should the web not be dynamic enough to figure out what sort of hardware it’s interacting with and delivering an appropriate version of the web site accordingly?
This is exactly what good website design Shrewsbury companies in Shropshire are doing right now!
