Hemorrhoids are the unusual swelling of the blood vessels around the rectal region and pregnant women are very susceptible. These swelling blood vessels can burn so hard that one may have bowel movements that are filled with blood or become uncomfortable with itchiness and pain.

When does it happen?

It usually occurs during the 3rd quarter of the pregnancy when the fetus inside is large enough to exert pressure on the abdominal area and on the blood vessels. If you’ve had hemorrhoids before pregnancy, there is a higher risk for you to develop hemorrhoids during pregnancy.

In other cases, hemorrhoids develop during labor and so it is a common complaint during postpartum.

Why is it common during pregnancy?

There are many reasons for this. One, progesterone levels are high during pregnancy. Progesterone relaxes the veins in the body and therefore those blood vessels in the rectum can swell easily. Two, constipation is also common during pregnancy. Difficult bowel movements can strain or cause wounds in that area.

Three, the growing fetus inside exerts pressure on the veins ...
... around the uterus – the inferior vena cava and the pelvic veins. Abnormal pressure on the inferior vena cava causes slow down the movement of blood from the lower part of the body. In the process, all the veins below the uterus become swollen or dilated. That explains why most pregnant women develop varicose veins.

Can it be avoided?

Yes, it can be avoided. One of the best ways is to be careful about the things that you eat. Doctors would usually recommend increasing the intake of high-fiber foods. For that, you need to eat more fruits and vegetables. Specifically, they recommend whole grains that can help in providing moisture and bulk to stool. Along with these foods, you may also use fiber supplements. Psyllium seed husks and freshly ground flax seeds are very rich in fiber.

Increase your fluid intake – water and fruit juices. Avoid coffee, tea and alcohol. These substances cause the body to lose a lot of fluids. Increasing your fluid intake lessen the risk of experiencing constipation.

Lifestyle change is necessary.

•Exercising is highly recommended. Ask your physicians what are the most effective exercises for lessening the pressure in the anal region. Have at least 30 minutes of exercise everyday.

•Avoid gaining weight during pregnancy but you don’t to take weight-loss supplements for that. Make sure that you control eating sweets like chocolates and fatty foods.

•Also, create for yourself an active lifestyle. Help your blood to circulate faster by doing many things such as gardening or just plain cleaning the house. Just avoid sitting or standing too long.

A word of caution

If you have already experienced hemorrhoid condition before, all the more that you should prepare yourself for the high possibility that it will occur again in pregnancy. Your susceptibility is too high to ignore. Apart from the recommendations above, you should also find ways to strengthen your nerves. You can talk with your doctor about this.
