Visit the Memorial Chorten built in memory of the father of modern Bhutan, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk. For culture and arts visit the National Textile Museum, National Library, Folk Heritage Museum and buy handicrafts and jewelry. Trashichho dzong, an impressive monastery the summer residence of the Chief Abbot, also houses the Secretariat building, government offices and the king’s throne room. See the Anim Dratshang nunnery. BBS tower offers spectacular views of the Thimpu valley. See Bhutan’s unusual national animal, Takin, that looks like a cross between a goat and a cow at the Takin preserve. Travel up the high mountain pass of Dochu La at 10,130 feet, through thick forests of oak and rhododendron to reach Gangtey. Explore Gangtey village home to the area’s only Nyingmapa monastery and the winter home for black necked cranes.
Travel towards eastern Bhutan to beautiful Punakha, formerly Bhutan’s capital rising 3000m around Dochhula pass. Impressive panoramic views await you at the Wangdue Phodran Dzong the 16th century fortress monastery built at the confluence of the Pho Chu and Mo Chu rivers. Although destroyed extensively by fire in June 2012, the Dzong is being rebuilt. Go up the Mo Chu River to the Khamsun Yuelley Namgyal Chorten (memorial), visit Punakha Dzong straddling the two rivers. In Paro see the Rinpung Dzong. Trek to the famous Takshang Monastery or Tigers Nest said to have been the site where Guru Rinpoche arrived on a tigress and meditated. Or drive to the Chela La Pass for scenic mountain views.
