Thekkady and Periyar are a part of the Idukki district of Kerala. Tourists are attracted to this destination as this place is blessed with savanna grasslands, semi-evergreen moist deciduous forest and dense green forest. These forests have been inhabited by Nilgiri langurs, lion-tailed Macaques, and gaur, tigers, sambar and elephants. There is ample scope for trekking and mountain walking offered by the Periyar wild life sanctuary.

The Only Tiger Reserve

The Periyar tiger reserve is the only tiger reserve in Kerala at present. The attractions in Thekkady are centred on this reserve. Thekkady Tour Packages take you on a trip to explore these forests either by riding on an elephant, taking a motor boat cruise or by trekking. You can reach the other sites by hiring a taxi or your hotel will arrange the trip for you.

Thekkady Holiday Package will allow you to indulge in various activities such as night safari, tribal heritage nature walk, bamboo rafting ...
... and border hiking. All your excursions will be from a common starting point either the boat landing point or the bamboo grove. You can visit this place in any season, but be well equipped with light cotton clothing and high SPF sunscreen, as the sun here can create problems with your skin.

While selecting from Thekkady Hotels you can choose the Spice village. The resort here provides you with an excellent restaurant, gaming facilities and a swimming pool. The dwellings have thatched roofs and look like a jungle home. If you are fond of spices you can shop to your heart’s content for exotic condiments at a pretty town in the Cardamom hills called Kumily. This place is in the proximity of the Periyar tiger resort. It is a major tourist destination and a spice trading centre.

If you are tired of shopping, you can have a taste of south Indian dishes, specially the snacks such as banana chips which are fried in coconut oil. You can also shop for souvenir to take home such as tiger and elephant motif T-shirts for your kids. For your good health you can purchase some eco spices which are available at the eco shops.

If you visit the local markets situated in the narrow alleys, you can take a stock of spices for your home. The spices available here are cloves, coriander, star anise, nutmeg, cardamom, rolls of cinnamon and almost every kind of pepper. All these are packed in pouches with printed labels.
