Tier Iii Data Centre
What is a Tier III Data Centre one might ask? Tier rankings come from the Uptime Institute, an organization which sought to simplify how data centres are categorized, thus differentiating between the different types of data centres in existence. This allows for specific criteria to determine what rank a data centre will have. For purposes of the tier ranking systems a data centre would be defined as more than basic equipment closest, more than a room with rack servers. A data centre would be defined as a place in which engine generators, UPS devices, and the proper equipment to operate a data centre are housed. Short of these characteristics and we're not looking at a data centre. A Tier I data centre meets these very basic requirements. A Tier III Data Centre is an advanced Data Centre, let's look more into what makes these data centres unique.
Choosing or developing a data centre is an important choice; many companies look mostly at technology based needs when making these decisions; however this might not tell the whole story. When looking into certifications a business must ask themselves how tolerant they are to faults. ...
... That is to say, what is the financial impact of the systems being down? Tier level certifications look at how fault-tolerant and how redundant these data centres are. Should an outage cause large amounts of financial impact then a company needs a higher tier, or a more fault-tolerant data centre. A Tier III Data Centre is a concurrently maintainable state, meaning the system does not need to be brought down to perform maintenance needs. This is great for organizations who have customers that are affected greatly when maintenance period shut downs are required. This eliminates those required down periods, thus saving the company potential lost revenue and increases customer satisfaction. To achieve a Tier III rating the facility must met all requirements of that level. Any shortage of these requirements, and the facility would be rated a Tier II. In a Tier III and Tier IV facility the engine generators must be able to power the centre indefinitely, thus a power outage wouldn't bring the centre down. These are some basic features of what makes a Tier III Data Centre.
Is a Tier III data centre right for your organization or do you need a Tier IV? The major difference here comes down to fault-tolerance. In a Tier III, we've established that the need to take the system down for planned maintainability is eliminated; this is also true of a Tier IV. In a Tier III facility one must ask themselves if an unexpected failure, even for a short period of time, would be survivable, with little to no long term impact on the organization. If a company is able to handle such an unexpected issue than a Tier III is perfect for them. Should an unexpected failure cause catastrophe then a Tier IV is a must as Tier IV data centres are completely fault-tolerant.
Choosing a Tier III Data Centre is right for many organizations, hopefully you’re more prepared on what a Tier III centre is, and why certification is important.
