How To Spend Your Gap Year
Either before or after university, many people choose to take a gap year, there can be many reasons for this, some do it to gain work experience, some do it to get more or improve existing qualifications, and others do it so that they can go travelling. Travelling is fast becoming one of the most popular things for both the young and the old to do, and by travelling I don’t just mean going on a two week holiday to a 4* hotel in Italy. I am referring to travelling to the other side of the world with only a backpack, visiting remote locations and being right in the heart of the foreign culture; proper travelling!
The travelling experience
People say all the time ‘oh yes I’ve been travelling’ but travelling can mean many things, for example; some people think of travelling as spending week after week in exotic locations, lounging on a picturesque beach and seeing exotic animals. Others see travelling as backpacking through remote locations and having adventures, and some see travelling as a way to see the world whilst helping make it better at the same time. For example, ...
... I spoke to a 22 year old girl who spent her gap year as a volunteer in South America, and she said this:
‘My time volunteering in South America was one of the most amazing and unforgettable few months of my life, I travelled to some of the most beautiful places in the world, met some of the most kind and giving people and got to do some really rewarding work. If I could give anyone one piece of advice about their gap year it would be to do something special and different, something that will benefit others not just yourself as it will make your gap year ten times better.’
