Is it possible for someone to find me though an IP address search? Yes it is possible. In most cases, it can be determined what the person’s ISP is and also which city and state he resides in. IN other cases, the static IP address DSL or business DSL services that the ISP provides with the allocation records of the IP for internet numbers, non-profit organizations that manages internet numbering resources in the US can find out where you are. For people who want anonymity, it would be better if they installed proxy servers and read about how to hide your IP address. Yet, sometimes people reveal small bits of personal information about themselves on chat rooms, blogs, forums and even social websites. These can be used to make up your profile.

IP address allocation is handled by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority that delegate it to the Regional Internet Registries who in turn further delegate blocks of IP addresses to their customers including the ISPs(Internet Service Providers) or end user organizations. Each regional registry office handles a specific geographic area and there are 5 areas in all and each ...
... allow look ups to be to that data. Different ISPs block separate their blocks of IP addresses by region and this can be see in the lookup, which provides organizational names and addresses that the block was allocated to and can name them if required. The naming often shows a geographic location e.g. LAX-CA aka Los Angeles Airport, California.

Generally, I can begin the IP address search with the regional registry seeing what geographic location information can be looked at from the results. Then, if I conduct a reverse DNS lookup, the ISP will provide me the hostname. This is something like www.example.com or can be more specific to include details of the regional information. From there, I can do a tracer route that displays the host names of many machines that connect two points on the internet. Sometimes this does not reveal any specific location of a specific IP address, but the rDNS/hostname can reveal the machines next to the location I am looking for along the path.

There are two main kinds of internet addresses – Ipv4 and Ipv6 that are in use and allocated to those who show that they need addresses for their networks. In a technical way, the allocation of IP addresses has to follow the topology of the network and not any particular geography or national border. Otherwise the internet will not work. Earlier some organizations received a huge number of IP addresses while others did not receive what was required. Therefore, the addresses are allocated for use in specific networks as and when they are required. It is the responsibility of Regional Registries to do this within community developed policies that are designed to ensure that there is a fair distribution and it is now easy to conduct an IP address search.
