Rail, Road Options – Bangalore To Salem

Bangalore is known by several nicknames. It is known as the ‘City of Gardens’ because it has several gardens and parks. It was once known as the ‘Pensioner’s paradise’ due to the peaceful atmosphere prevailing in the city then. Now Bangalore is known as the ‘Silicon Valley of India’. The city is a major exporter of information technology from India.
Bangalore has natural parks, architectural landmarks, flowering trees, shrines, lakes, research institutions and shopping malls to attract the tourists. Bangalore was earlier known as Bengaluru. The colonial rulers named it Bangalore for their easy pronunciation. Now it has again got its old name Bengaluru.
Bangalore Palace and Tipu Sultan Palace are the main attractions in Bangalore. Chikkajala Fort is situated on airport road. The city has some natural lakes like Hasaraghhatta, Hebbal and Ulsoor. Ulsoor is a popular picnic spot where boating facility is also available.

The distance from Bangalore to Salem is about 200 km. Salem, known as Steel City, can be reached from Bangalore by road or rail only. There are several trains on this route. The train takes around four hours to travel from Bangalore to Salem.
However, the best way to travel from Bangalore to Salem is by road. The main towns in the route to Salem are Hosur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Jodukuli. There are several petrol pumps, ATMs and hotels/restaurants on the way. Both taxi cab and bus take around three hours to reach the destination. Buses are plied on this route at regular intervals. The minimum taxi fare to reach Salem is over Rs.2000.
The human civilisation in Salem dates back to the Stone Age. This has been proved by the discovery of stone implements and dung ash heaps in and around Salem. The word Salem is believed to have originated from Cheram (Keralam or Seram), indicating the region as a Cheram land. Salem in Tamil Nadu was a chief weaving centre since a few centuries.
Salem and its neighbouring areas offer a variety of sightseeing options. The prominent amongst them are Yercaud Hills, Yercaud Lake, Kiliyur Falls, Kurumpapatti Zoological Park, Water Theme Park, Sankakiri Fort, and Jama Masjid.
Among the temples frequently visited by the travellers are Sugavaneshwarar Temple, Arulmigi Alagirnathar Temple, EllaiPedari Amman Temple, Kottai Mariamman Temple, Tharamangalam Temple, Kandhasramam Temple, Kandhaswamy Kovil, 1008 Lingam Temple, Sathya Narayana Temple and Siddhar Temple.
Yercaud Hills, a famous hill station, lies in proximity to Salem. The period between the months of November and March is the best time to visit Salem.
