Informal essays are written for enjoyment. This does not mean they cannot be persuasive or informative. They are less formal statements. Good informal essays have a relaxed style, but they maintain a strong structure. However, the structure can be less rigid than the one for formal essays. Informal essays are more personal than formal ones, though both can express subjective opinions. Informal essays are different from formal one as the writers take different positions when writing them.
In informal essays, the writers speak directly to the audience using a conversation style. On the other hand, the writer does not speak to the readers directly in formal papers. The writer remains silent behind the words. When writing informal essay, the writers are supposed to maintain a sense of personality. They should not worry about making them sound academic. The writer should prevent sloppiness. When writing informal essays one is supposed to use his point of view. Using his point of view makes it easy for the student to communicate with the audience. Students can use words that help them communicate with the readers such as ...
... “I” and “you’. The words help students connect with the audience. They can also use slang and colloquialisms. This is because informal essays are not considered academic and should not use proper vocabulary like formal papers. As stated earlier, the papers are meant for entertainment and reflection as the writer should try to connect with the readers so as to entertain them. When writing formal papers, one is supposed to use technical words depending on the topic and courage being studied. Students are not supposed to use slang when writing formal papers. They are not allowed to use words such as “I” and “you” as they affect the quality of their homework. Formal papers are not supposed to entertain the readers, but provoke actions and thoughts. Thus, they are supposed to be written keenly.
Moreover, informal essays are loosely structured compared to formal assignments. They do not follow a rigid structure. Students are not supposed to develop one idea or argument to support their thesis. The thesis of informal essays can be found anywhere in the assignments. It does not necessary come at the beginning of the informal essays. Also, students might not state the thesis statement explicitly when writing informal essays.
Informal essays also have a different tone from other papers. Informal essays are more personal and subjective compared to formal ones. They can be ironic in nature, amusing and serious. In addition, they can be thoughtful and angry. The tone of the assignments depends on the message the student wants to communicate to the readers. Additionally, it depends on the instructions accompanying the papers and also the student interest. Further, the topic selected can also determine the tone of their assignments. Thus, students should be keen when deciding the topic to examine as this affects their papers. They should follow the specifications carefully when writing their assignment. They should use vivid descriptions, personal stories and expositions when writing their assignments. They can also use arguments to develop a persuasive or argumentative paper. Using different language devices makes the assignments accessible to different readers. This is because the readers find them interesting and appropriate for their requirements. Hence, students should include the requirements above when writing such papers.
