The Benefits Of Using Recycled Paper
Recycled paper can be found in products ranging from stationary to paper towels. The benefits of committing to these small changes have an active impact on the environment. Despite synthetic technologies, the primary ingredient in paper is trees. Opting to use recycled paper results in the survival of trees which provide natural habitats for a variety of animals, insects, and other plant life.
Thinking about having a party or celebrating a special occasion? Consider using recycled paper in your invitations and announcements. Paper plates, paper towels, napkins, and bags made from recycled paper can be purchased for use at family barbecues and picnics. These are common events that use everyday products which can easily be replaced by recycled paper.
The Basics
Recycled paper is the result of taking used paper products and reducing them back into pulp using water, heat, and chemicals that clean and sterilize the paper. Once the pulp is created it is then strained to remove impurities such as glues, inks, or plastics. Afterwards the recycled paper pulp is bleached ...
... and mixed with more water then processed into paper products the same as tree pulp.
The Savings
More than 35% of all felled trees are used to create paper products which have an effect on the environment via raw materials processing and waste disposal issues. By using recycled paper you contribute to reduced carbon printing and the survival of forests. One tone of recycled paper produces the equivalent of two tons of felled wood.
Recycled paper takes less energy to produce that raw wood saving an estimated 40% in electricity and hydro-power; that is enough energy to heat and cool a three bedroom house for a family of five for an entire year. The production of recycled paper saves space in landfills as well; nearly 35% of all landfills contain recyclable paper. If everyone recycled used paper we could reduce the number of landfills by almost a third.
More importantly, processing recycled paper benefits fresh water sources and air. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that recycling paper reduces fresh water pollution by almost 35% while reducing air pollution by nearly 74%.
Over a short period of time the decreases in energy usages and the lower levels of planetary contamination will revive dead zones surrounding paper mills.
Taking the Initiative
If enough people make the small step and purchase strictly recycled paper products they will send an overwhelming message to paper manufactures to cease contaminating the air and water and to cut back on deforestation. There are a number of sources that can assist you in switching to recycled paper products.
