More Than Just Singular And Plural-differentiating Monoclonal And Polyclonal Antibodies
Human body has evolved itself in a marvellous way to fight the various dangers and challenges that nature has to provide. Disease is one such constant source of threat, which has been a daunting challenge to the human take part since the dawn of its young evolution. But our bodies have devised wonderful ways to fight these diseases. The white blood cells of our bodies are the soldiers that produce antibodies when faced with foreign invasion. These antibodies have evolved in configuration and molecular making to fight the various kinds of epidemics that mankind has been evolutionarily exposed to.
There are two basic kinds of antibodies – monoclonal antibodies and polyclonal antibodies. Well, it has nothing that is related to artificial cloning or something! The mode of working of antibodies is that they have specific molecular areas that resemble equivalent areas of antigens, or in a normal tongue, foreign bodies. Now, these antigens be at variance from each other in the number of these areas, also called epitopes. Some antigen would have one epitope; some would have more than one. Accordingly, B-Lymphocytes, or WBCs ...
... would bring into being antibodies with the capability to attack only one of these epitopes or more than one epitope.
Those antibodies that have one paratopes and are capable of fighting antigens; where the respective epitope is present, are called monoclonal antibodies. Generally, due to the presence of just one paratopes, the activity of these antibodies is restricted to a specific kind of antigens. This limits their utilisation on the laboratory to a specific kind of purpose only. Polyclonal antibodies, on the other hand, have paratopes that are modifies to attack various epitopes. Thus, one polyclonal antibody can fight a wide range of antigens. The word ‘clonal’ has its significance in the fact that when the body comes to realise the presence of a certain foreign agent, it tends to devise out an antibody in mass proportions, wherein, one antibody is an exact clone of the other.
Conventionally, monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies are products that are manufactured n the body. Sometimes it so happens, that a specific antibody cannot be produced in the human body. In such cases, a number of other animals like a rabbit or a guinea pig is used to produce antibodies by vaccinating them. Custom monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies are also isolated and manufactured on a mass scale in laboratories and other related institutions. Here, the paratopes are wilfully changed or mutated to experiment them with mutated antigens. Other than this, monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies find applications in pathological laboratories to decipher the presence of diseases in blood and lymph samples. Generally, polyclonal antibodies, tagged with luminous molecules are used for this purpose.
