Rowling breaks the mould by displaying her versatility in doing justice to a different genre altogether.

The wives and their husbands find themselves, sharpening their daggers and flaring their nostrils at the opposite sides of the battle field, the teachers go on the offensive; not in the name of disciplining recalcitrants but for a wider objective. These disturbances serve as a mere prelude to the ultimate war, the war that would stain immaculate cassocks and habits, the war to win the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council. The later half of ‘The Casual Vacancy’ narrates a tale of politics, played viciously to gain authority. The election leads to a chain of mud slinging and duplicity runs amok. Ethics burn on the pyre of materialistic desires and unexpected revelations question established beliefs. We won’t be needing the sorting hat to know whether ‘The Casual Vacancy’ will make it to the house of Bestsellers or not but certainly counting the days of its release could make a few desperate souls display the symptoms induced by The Draught Of Living Death.
