The presentation of the CV gives as much insight into the candidate as the CV itself does and with the recruiters giving only seven seconds to a CV, it is imperative that your CV says exactly what they would like to hear. Understanding what the recruiters look for in a CV will increase your chances of getting your CV shortlisted.

Following is a compilation of the things which the recruiters would like to see in a CV.

The content should quickly tell the recruiter how hiring you will benefit them, and how the applicant is different to all the others who applied.

It should highlight the skills and achievements of the applicant and how will they fit in the job they are applying for. Achievements not relevant to the job should best be avoided.

The appearance of the CV should be sharp, readable, laid out well and without gaps. It should not be written like an essay with long winding sentences.

Skill sets should not be repeated in the CV. If you have mentioned a skill in your summary, it will make sense not to repeat it while describing your job experience later in the CV.

The ...
... CV should have a summary which should briefly highlight your skills, experience and what a potential employer could expect from you.

The CV should talk about how the candidate matches the title and the functional requirement of the job.

The CV should be laid out chronologically as these are easier to review. The CV should show dates, data/facts, numbers, and achievements in proper order.

The CV should not have any spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

The CV should not have too much information, displayed in a paragraph format, as it makes the recruiter read too much.

The CV should have adequate white space, and not be too cluttered.

The CV should briefly talk about the company(s) you have worked for.

It should highlight your accomplishments, but these should be highlighted in a relevant context. For example – Just saying that you helped implement a new vendor empanelment process does not make sense unless you explain how it helped to increase efficiencies/save costs.

The CV should not include unnecessary details which do not support your candidature. Avoid giving too much or too little information.

The CV should be attached with a cover note. Demonstrating your knowledge about the company you are applying for and how and why you are a good fit will add weight to your application. This will increase your chances of getting shortlisted for an interview.

The CV should be customized to the company/job you are applying for.

These guidelines should help you develop a CV which the recruiters would like to read. It would also help to hire a professional resume writing service firm, who are experts in writing CVs and will be able to help you by developing a CV that works.
