The lathe is an ancient tool originally developed by the Egyptians around 1300 BC. It?s a machine tool that performs turning operations in which unwanted material is removed from a work piece rotated against a cutting tool.

During the Industrial Revolution in England, the lathe machine was used for metal cutting. Lathes are primarily used in woodturning, metalworking and glass working. Table legs, baseball bats, musical instruments, crankshafts and candlestick holders are examples of products which can be produced on a lath machine.

Lathe Machines:

There are various categories of lathes such as jeweller?s lathes, woodworking lathes, metalworking lathes, and metal spinning lathes, glass working lathes, ornamental turning lathes, rotary lathes, watchmaker?s lathes and cue lathes. Jewellers? lathes are the smallest lathes.

Woodworking lathes machines are the oldest amongst lathes machines through which we can make woodwind instruments, bowls and plates. Metal working lathes are of two types, manual and computerised for mass production of parts.

There is almost no difference between metal spinning ...
... lathes and woodturning lathes which can be used to make a sheet metal bowl and spoons. Glass working lathes are almost similar in design to the other lathes machines and are used for making complex lenses and glass materials.

Ornamental turning lathes were developed in the nineteenth century for decorative work. Rotary lathes were developed in the middle of 19th century in U.S for making plywood. Watchmaker?s lathes are precise metalworking lathes used primarily by horologists. Other lathes such as Cue lathes are almost similar to spinning lathes used that are used to finish cues. There are four types of lathe machines, light, medium, heavy duty and all geared lathe machines.
