To comply with the new federal law, REAL ID, Wisconsin has begun issuing new driver licenses and identification (ID) cards. Currently, Wisconsin does not require people holding valid driver’s licenses to replace them. Because Wisconsin is not equipped to meet the new requirements, and for heightened security purposes, those people receiving the new cards will get them via mail within 10 business days. However, a temporary license or ID card will be issued at the DMV to serve as a receipt, valid for 45 days, which looks as follows:

This receipt will be an acceptable ID for voting and will serve as a driver’s license until the card arrives in the mail. This will not be a valid ID to request a Social Security Number replacement card. Features are designed to avert counterfeiting, reduce the risk of identity theft, and decrease fraud.
