Lawn bowling is a highly popular sport in the countries of Australia, New Zealand, United States and Japan. This game essentially requires a person to role a big biased ball as close as possible to another smaller ball called a ‘jack’. The biased ball is not perfectly uniform in shape, instead it is slightly flat from one side, this skewed shape causes the ball to roll in a curved path as opposed to a straight one. This increases the challenge as well as the fun of the game.

While playing the sport requires very little paraphernalia, there are a number of clubs around the world that have dedicated huge lawns for the enjoyment of this game. Lawn bowling Melbourne is a professional sport that is enjoyed by many throughout the year thanks to all weather bowling clubs in the city. While the tournaments are extremely competitive events played by professionals this sport is also enjoyed by the local crowds of the city. A highly informal version of lawn bowling is named as barefoot bowling. While the rules of the game remain the same, this is played by the amateurs for fun. The game is a highly popular family entertainment ...
... and a great way to bond together on a Sunday afternoon.

Lawn bowling Melbourne is played on a large and rectangular surface that can be synthetic or made of manicured grass. This surface is divided into parallel strips each of which is termed the rink. The objective of the game is to get the big balls as close as possible to the smaller jack while ensuring that the biased balls do not get out of the rink assigned. While the trajectory of the ball might fall out of the rink, the ball should come to rest inside the rink for it to remain alive in the game. In older days balls were biased using additional weight to one side that is no longer the practice. Instead a slight change in the shape of the ball from one side ensures that the ball follows a curved trajectory.

The complexity of the game increases with the number of players. Team games in particular can become intensive competitive and intense at the end. As there are a number of balls close to the jack at the end the teams might aim to block the other team’s ball from taking the lead rather than aiming to get it closer to the jack. The popularity of the sport has led clubs to come up with indoor rinks allowing the play to continue be it wind, rain or hail. Certain clubs offer other facilities like refreshments as well in order to make the whole experience even more enjoyable.

The game is played either on a flat surface called the flat green bowls or on an uneven or convex surface called as the crown green bowls. Both the variants are highly popular and entertaining providing hours of fun to the participants as well as the audience.
