Ways To Motivate Your Team
Sometimes leading a team can be difficult when there are many tasks to get done. One of the most effective tools of any great leader is his or her ability to inspire confidence amongst teammates through motivation. In a world full of pressing deadlines, and long hours, project managers must find different ways to keep their teammates mentally focused. Here are some great ways that you can motivate your team to achieve at a high level.
Set clear expectations
Often times a large part of one’s ability to succeed is predicated on knowing what is expected. Make sure at the outset of every project that you spend time with each member of your team and go over specific expectations that you have for them. Set goals that are realistic and specific so that each team member feels both involved and focused. If everyone on the team has defined roles and an understanding of what it means to succeed in those roles, the team will be able to execute much more efficiently. This will work wonders.
Challenge Your Team Members

... of our ability. The truth is that very few people challenge themselves to bring out the best that they have to offer; this is why leaders must take on this role. Demand the best that your teammates have to offer. While this task may be uncomfortable and may not make you the most easy-going manager, your teammates will appreciate it and the results will show. Make sure at every turn that your team is being pushed to do more than just average work.
Give Great Incentives
A great way to motivate members on your team to do great work is to give them an incentive. It’s not that the work itself shouldn’t be enough motivation, but some workers excel more if there is an added bonus that is really enticing. Everyone loves to be rewarded for their work both in small and large ways. It helps to validate the many hours of hard work that are put in day in and day out. Don’t be afraid to add a little icing on the cake. Even if it is something small like a free dinner or a small gift, it can make a large difference in the day-to-day motivational process of your team which is very important.
Tell Team Members When They Have Done a Great Job
This is possibly the most important way for a project manager to motivate team members. When a member of your team has done something well, make sure to tell them immediately what a great job they have done. Explain to them how much you appreciate their diligence and why it is important. This will make your team members feel more important, well-appreciated and will boost confidence. Resist the urge to flatter team members. Only give compliments and credit where it is due; people can tell the difference between genuine appreciation and patronization.
