Going Green For Your Wedding
So there, you’ve prepared all there is for your bridal gown and that of your entourage. Your bridal pearl jewelry is sparkling in its box. You’ve always wanted a pearl jewelry for your wedding and now you’ve got it. Your entourage will all be donned in their crystal jewelry as requested. Even your groom’s tux has pearl jewelry as its button.
Since you’ve already got what you’ve always wanted for the wedding look of your attires, maybe it’s time to give back something in return. Maybe it’s a good idea to do something for mother earth this time and go green on your wedding.
Green Wedding
Green wedding is an environmental way of celebrating your wedding by going organic. From your wedding invitation to the decorations and even to the food you serve, it’s just a matter of reducing your carbon footprint in the world.
Green weddings are actually becoming a fast-growing trend in the US. There are not much statistics to back this up but more bridal magazines and businesses intended for weddings have confirmed that they have seen a proclivity for this scene.
According to Mireya Navarro ...
... of New York Times, “Many couples say they like the idea of downsizing and simplifying their wedding to prevent more depletion of natural resources. The concept of shunning excess and over-consumption is also particularly appealing at a time wedding budgets often reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.”
This means that other than giving back to nature, green weddings also help you economize. America being the number one pollutant in the world and currently experiencing an economic crisis, going green is a win-win situation.
Venue
When using garden settings, you get to rely on the natural beauty of nature, minimizing your need to put in decorations. Decorations require plastic products, manual labor, which necessitates transportations, and additional garbage. Celebrating your wedding during the day also saves on electricity.
A new venue for weddings that’s slowly rising in this digital age is cyber-wedding. Your guests get to attend the ceremony via live streaming. This is especially ideal for those whose friends and families are all over the world.
Invitation
If people have stopped writing letters on actual paper and using email instead, this could also be idyllic for wedding invitations. Navarro wrote,” Many etiquette experts frown on these electronic invitations as too impersonal.” In fact, some people miss receiving a letter in the mail other than catalogs and bills, but sentimental reasons aside, you get to save a lot of trees emailing your invitation. And people will understand that now more than ever.
Bridal Registry
The more actively environmental couples go the extreme by forgoing actual gifts. Instead they propose donations to charities or sometimes financing their honeymoon. Some would ask for nature-inspired gifts like bamboo tableware or recycled items. Other couples would recommend avoiding gift-wrapping to cut down on the use of paper.
Reception
Another way of going green is through your reception. One good recommendation is having your food catered locally. This would minimize carbon-emission from the vehicles if the catering would come from nearby. Beef is also avoided as this meat has a high maintenance way of cooking.
Other suggestions for a green wedding reception are reusable tableware, going sit-down dinner instead of buffet, which decreases the use of more utensils as well as cutting down on the need for heavier transportation and water for washing them.
So have your pearl jewelry, your Swarovski crystal bridal jewelry on your dress, but give back to mother earth by going green on your wedding.
