Chennai To Mahabalipuram- Way To Know About Mahabali
Mahabalipuram, a sea port of 7th century, is located in the district of Kancheepuram in the state of Tamil Nadu. Mahabalipuram is said to be the second capital of Pallava dynasty. The city was flourished during the Pallava rule. Mahabalipuram is known for its several ancient historical monuments which are in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and for the sandy beaches. These monuments are built between 7th and 9th centuries. Placed along the Coromandel Coast, Mahabalipuram, is known for the casuarinas trees and ancient temples.
From Mahabalipuram, archeologists recovered various megalithic items like burial urns, jars for burials, coins, and cairn circles. The city, also known as Mamallapuram, is also famous for its ancient temples built by Pallavas made from rocks. Some of these temples were carved out of the rocks. This construction of rock cut caves is similar in structure to the rock-cut constructions of Ajantha and Ellora caves. The sculptures of elephants, Nandi, lion, rathas and palaces in granite are eye catching. A dance festival is celebrated every year which is organized by Tourism Department. Mahabalipuram does not have an airport or railway station. Mahabalipuram is situated very near to Chennai. Chengalpattu (CGL) is the nearest railway station. There are many trains pass through Chengalpattu station from Chennai.
The best way to reach Mahabalipuram from Chennai is by road. Cabs are available from Chennai to Mahabalipuram.
Daily bus service is available from Chennai to Mahabalipuram and they charge Rs. 100/- for a trip.
Taxis charge Rs. 2,200/- to reach Mahabalipuram from Chennai. This cab is for four people. For seven people it costs Rs. 3,000/- for a round trip.
If you have your own vehicle it takes approximately 1 hour to cover the 56 km from Chennai to Mahabalipuram depending upon the vehicle.
