We often think that success will find us but to truly be a success you have to go out and find it, especially in your career. Career success is truly a marathon event because it doesn’t happen overnight!
So how do you make that happen and what tools do you need?
Integrity and a commitment to your goals is a huge part of that along with a healthy dose of inherent common sense. Most everything else comes from hard work, something that many people have forgotten. I know because I see it almost everyday from one angle or another, people doing everything possible to shoot themselves in the foot while at work.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of people who get “it” and are quite successful but if you asked them how they got there you will often hear how much work went into achieving their goals. As an example, look at Mark Zuckerberg, he got Face book to where it is by sheer will to see it happen – despite the missteps along the way, including what many feel is the sad reality that Face book may have peaked a bit too soon. ... exactly the wrong way to realize career success. Some people will also say that nice people don’t win, which is often seen in a corporate environment, the take away there is to make the most of your opportunities while growing the company and getting others to do the same – hopefully together.
Your job is hopefully to inspire a few people along the way to chase their dreams too. What goal you are after may change over time as you realize what it is you really want, which is very normal. The important part is to set your goals, make a plan for how you are going to realize them and persevere through the ups and downs. With your career success you will hopefully aspire to even better things – have new experiences or seek out tougher challenges to realize even more success in your chosen career.
