These Kolkata festivals portray the true spirit of the Bengali culture, thereby showcasing the interweaving of modern and traditional life that is so popular to the city. All the festivals in Kolkata are celebrated with great enthusiasm and excitement, with equal participation of people from all age groups.

Kolkata festivals - The most widely and extensively celebrated festivals of Kolkata are as follows.

Durga Puja
The most largely celebrated festivals in the eastern region of the country, Durga puja is a ten day festival when Goddess Durga descends to earth with her four children to eradicate and kill evil. The festivities start off from Mahalaya and finish off on Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day. This festival falls in the month of September-October every year. After Vijaya Dashami, the idols are immersed in the Ganges with chants, music and loads of celebrations.

Kali Puja
Durga puja is followed by Kali puja which is celebrated 15 days after Vijaya Dashami. During this puja, Goddess Kali, the epitome ...
