Thousands of Canadians are reliant on truck drivers being Responsible

Every day in millions Canadians are on the roads going to and from work, taking their children to school, going on holidays or just driving around. What most people are not aware of is the number of trucks hauling dangerous goods which occupy the very same roads each and every day.

Thinking about it, there are thousands and thousands of drivers who deliver dangerous goods to multiple locations across the country. These potentially hazardous materials, if exposed to specific conditions, could be responsible for causing considerable damage and endangering not only the driver’s life, but everyone else on the road as well.

In order to keep our roadways safe, the transporters of these dangerous goods have to be aware of the specific dangers of each product they carry, and how potential hazards of these goods could affect the lives of the millions of drivers who share the road with them.

This decade, between 2010 and 2020, has been declared the Decade of Action for Road Safety by the United Nations. In addition, 2011 was the Canadian ...
... Year of Road Safety which kicks off Canada’s Road Safety Strategy of 2015. The problem is that road conditions and hazards on the road causing deaths or injuries have continue to be on the rise, not only in Canada, but globally.

There were more than 750,000 heavy trucks and 20 million passenger vehicles actively registered for use on Canadian roads in 2011. The mathematics of probability clearly point out that road safety needs to be a major priority, not only for drivers, but for all Canadians.

Transport Canada has been assigned the responsibility to create and implement safety standards and regulations to promote public safety during the transportation of dangerous goods in Canada. In part, to achieve this mandate, Transport Canada requires any person transporting dangerous goods must either be certified with, or directly supervised by an individual that has certified training in the area of the transportation of dangerous goods.

The Canadian Online Safety Training Association is a major supporter of road safety in Canada and now offers one of the most comprehensive Transportation of Dangerous Goods Courses available online. This course, developed by Wheels On Ltd., covers legislative requirements for the transport of dangerous goods, and provides a clear and concise presentation of information that is easy to understand and retain.

Other courses offered by the Canadian Online Safety Training Association include topics such Winter Driving Fundamentals, Effects of Stress on Driving (dealing with road rage) and Backing Fundamentals.
