Streaming movies and other video on your smartphone is a piece of cake. Most new smartphones are powerful enough and equipped with high resolution screens to show quality videos. Coupled this with WiFi/3G/4G capabilities, and it’s very easy to stream videos while on the road. So if you happen to travel a lot and have a good wireless data plan, then you can use your mobile phone as your movie library.

The right Smartphone for Video

There are many smartphones in the market from the Samsung Galaxy to iPhone 4s – from Nokia Lumina to the Curve from BlackBerry. As of last year, smartphone market-share numbers clearly show Android dominating at 40%. iPhone is in second place at 16% followed by Windows and BlackBerry at single digit numbers. All of the latest smartphones, regardless of OS, have full media capabilities for users to view and enjoy mobile streaming content.

Mobile videos drain batteries

Watching mobile ...
... streaming videos on your phone eats up the battery a lot faster. This is because of the dual usage of the phone – the extensive use of video/audio capabilities of the phone as well as the 3G/4G connection to download the movie. This dual usage is bound to drain your battery faster than average. So don’t be surprised if your battery gives out half way through a full feature movie. So if you are on the road, then it’s a good idea to bring along a charging cable. These days, most trains and planes have power outlets near passenger seats. One way to reduce battery drain is to stop using other features of the phone (e.g. turn off Bluetooth). Dim the display and if possible use earphones (which you should anyway if you are on a plane/train as not to bother other passengers).

Streaming video Apps

One of the most popular apps for mobile streaming is NetFlix, where you can watch streaming video in high quality with a minimal subscription service. The cool thing about the app is that it lets you resume movies that you have previously watched from the same point you left off. This way you don’t need to spend minutes trying to find that that spot. If you are into Anime genre then Crunchyroll would be the must-have-app. This app easily shows great anime and drama very easily. If technology and business in your thing, then TED app that showcases various speakers from TED conference is a super download.

Mobile Video Platforms

Websites that want to offer mobile streaming run into device support issues. Not all types of video, on various formats, going through various network conditions, can render well on a mobile device. To address this issue, you’ve mobile video platforms that seamlessly support many types of mobile devices.

Unlike YouTube, these offer media streaming services without any loss of ownership from the content publisher. This means that more premium content owners use such services to stream mobile videos. With better analytics and the ability to maintain branding (e.g. no YouTube watermark embedded in videos) makes these services very desirable to premium content publishers.

So at the end, whatever smartphone or app or service you decide to use, it’s very easy to watch full-fledged movies on your long trips – one little thing to make the trip more enjoyable.
