If you been on the Internet for some years now, you'll remember a time when Advertisement on web pages was very like that on television. It resembled newspaper advertisement even more closely.

Remember, right? You'd be surfing sites and somewhere on every page you'd see an ad banner-sometimes these were very prominent banners, and more than one on a page. These banners would feature advertisements by those companies who were paying for them.

This was all fine, but it didn't really exploit the fact that the ads were being placed on the internet instead of in newspaper and the advantages the former medium has over the latter.
You're aware of what I mean. You must have come across it. You'd be looking through online shops which sell watches and the banner on the page advertises cars.

Yes, you might want to buy a car at some later time, but the thing is, you're looking for watches and if the banner had advertised watches, you would probably have clicked on it. The staff at Google thought much the same, and, in their usual inimitable way, came up with a great idea. The product of this idea was a targeted ...
... advertising program, and it's commonly known as Google AdSense.

Instead of going through a whole process just to get some advertisement your visitors will completely ignore, what you, the web-designer and/or website owner need to do is allocate a region of your screen. Then, you sign up for the Google AdSense program and add a few lines of code to your webpage. Google then ensures that advertisements, relevant to your webpage, appear in that area.

Google's essentially a search-engine based company. So it's easy for Google to perform this service. It searches out the keywords on your page, searches a database of websites to find the ones matching those keywords and thereby selects an advertisement. The webmaster receives a certain fee for every visitor to your page who clicks on the AdSense banner. Of course this is more likely to happen with AdSense than with the old-fashioned advertisements. People who're on your page are there because they're interested in those things, right?

The same thing-relevance of the advertisement to the page on which it is placed-helps those who want to place advertisements as well. This is why Google AdSense is great-all the banners are relevant to the pages they're on. This relevance keeps everyone happy-the advertiser places his ad relevantly, and gains more customers, the webmaster earns money off their websites, Google takes its cut. This is the key to the continuing success of AdSense.

Google, of course, has some very high standards. And AdSense, like other Google programs, lives up to those standards, in terms of functionality and appearance. You're limited to two AdSense banners on your site and Google only inserts texts in these. A major benefit is, unlike the traditional banners, AdSense banners are not at all obtrusive. However, this also means that you've got to place the banners prominently, so your visitors can see them.

So, to wrap up, Google AdSense is a unique advertising program, as the ads are relevant to the site they're on. An advertiser pays Google. Those who want to host the advertisements do so via AdSense and get paid by Google.

These financial transactions are run through Google, publishers and advertisers alike get access to statistics that help them understand the effectiveness of their campaign and moderate it. The process in its entirety is simple, elegant and effective. It suits everyone from site visitors, publishers and advertisers. AdSense is one of the several Google products that cement Google's reputation for innovation and inventive thought.
