Do you remember any of the trips you went on while you were at school? You might think the memories that come to mind – or not – will depend on your age more than anything else. But this isn’t the case. The most important thing will be how engaging that particular trip was. For instance, if you went on French school trips you may remember being in another country and experiencing how different that was. You may even remember trying to speak French so you could converse with the locals on your French school trips.

Of course not all school trips are held abroad. Lots of trips take place around the year to all kinds of destinations in the UK as well. From primary school children to senior school children, every child has the opportunity to go on school trips to London and to other major destinations in this country. Every single one of them presents a solid learning opportunity to them.

Part of the appeal of school trips is the ...
... ability the kids have to leave the classroom and explore another part of the country – or indeed the world. They can learn in an environment that feels fun, instead of being in the same classroom every day. Even though they feel as if they are having a good time – which of course most of them will be – they don’t sense they are learning. And yet it is these experiences, on school trips to London and other excursions, which will stay in the mind for many months and indeed years to come.

So in a sense it is not that the information they take in changes in any way. Rather, it is the mode of learning that changes. The more they sense they are able to get out and about and learn in different ways, the more the children seem to enjoy it. It works with all manner of different subjects too. French lessons get a whole new perspective when they are taught on a trip to France, while art lessons and history both get a new perspective when on a trip to London to see the museums and galleries there.

The good news is that school trips are just as popular today as they were many years ago. There is no sense that this could change either, as there are plenty of reasons why learning is made better and more in depth via school outings such as these. Every subject can benefit from adding in a trip or two to perk things up, and the children certainly seem to appreciate them. If you can remember the trips you went on when you were a child, you can be sure your children will remember theirs too.
