Are Flying Cars The Future?

The idea of personal flying vehicles has been around for ages. From X-Wing fighters in Star Wars to the flying family sedans in The Jetsons, the idea that being able to fly is infinitely better than being able to drive has been demonstrated time and time again. But what exactly are those benefits? This article breaks a few of them down.

More room to rush during rush hour

Imagine if the Brooklyn Bridge had six levels of roadway, and six entrances and exits. Not only could you get more people in and out of the city, but it would be so much faster as there’d be far less traffic per roadway.

Now imagine a bridge with as many lanes as the sky is high. That would be the biggest benefit of flying cars. If there was traffic on level 4, move up to level 5. Or level 5000. It doesn’t matter because there are no limits to how high in the sky you can go.

Smokey O’s

There are so many cool things you can do with a car: taking tight turns on two wheels, burning rubber donuts into the pavement, hitting top speed + 1 mph to name a few. But no matter what the trick of the day is, ...
... the reality is that you’ll always be limited by gravity. With a flying car, the sky’s literally the limit.

Why settle for simply taking a straightaway when you can do it in a pointed rotational spin like an arrow from a crossbow? Why just leave rubber o’s in the ground when you could make Smokey O’s in the sky? And there are no rollercoaster-style loops in the road to enjoy on your way to work every day. Not so in the sky. You could loop-dee-loop your entire commute.

Grand Entrances and Exits

From the Count of Monte Cristo making his public debut in a hot air balloon to the soldier that parachutes into Wolverine Stadium at Michigan University on homecoming weekend carrying the school colours, there’s something special about coming down from the sky. Maybe it’s a subliminal link to the existence of heaven and angels that makes people happy. Whatever it is, it leaves people in awe.

Imagine the kind of amazing things you’d see at Red Carpet affairs. The Oscars, for example. Women could continue to talk about the dresses, but now the men could talk about the entrance.

As for exits, flying off into the sunset is infinitely cooler than riding off; and if you time it right it could look awesome against the backdrop of a Harvest Moon. One of the most popular fly-offs is at the end of Grease where Danny and Sandy fly off in Greased Lightning.

Far fewer accidents

When you’ve got 360˚ to take evasive action, you can avoid so many collisions, thereby saving yourself far more time. That doesn’t mean you’d run into fewer bad drivers; but with a flying car, instead of flipping them the bird, you could flip them the Goose.

Are flying cars the future? Probably. But at the same time, if they were going to happen, would they have happened by now? The Jetsons took place in 2062, so there’s still time.
