There are many fascinating things for holidaymakers to see around the world, but few can beat the sheer majesty and wonder of the Aurora Borealis. It is little surprise therefore that so many people head off on Northern Lights holidays.

One man who has plenty of experience of trips like this is photographer Chad Blakley. He has spent a lot of time in the Abisko National Park in Sweden taking snaps of the natural wonder.

Over the course of three years, he took time-lapse video capturing the lights, SPACE.com reports. In total, he spent thousands of hours getting the footage in the park, which is located around 121 miles north of the Artic Circle.

He told SPACE.com: “By my calculation I have spent no less than 2,000 hours pointing my camera at the sky recording the northern lights to create this film.”

Mr Blakley added: “The video was created using DSLR cameras and a time-lapse technique that required thousands of images and hundreds of hours to produce. The opportunity to spend so much time in such an incredible environment capturing this phenomenon has been one of the most amazing experiences ...
... of my life.”

He went on to state that he feels “extremely lucky” to have seen the lights so often.

Meanwhile, his finished video lasts for nearly 14 minutes and it is called Lights Over Lapland.

Talking about the Aurora Borealis, SPACE.com suggested they are “some of the most impressive night experiences on the planet”. It also noted that the spectacle has inspired “countless” photographers and videographers.

It is caused by solar particles interacting with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and can very occasionally be seen in parts of the UK. However, those wanting a proper look often head off on Northern Lights holidays to places like the Abisko National Park.
