Over the years people have found many different products to collect. Sometimes these can be purely for sentimental reasons from a family interest point of view, or often based on travel and experiences which can start the collecting habit.

An interest or hobby is a good starting point for collectors and the enjoyment of drinking wine can lead onto people catching the collector's bug. However, the wine that would grace the dining table of most households could not be further away from the types of wines that are of interest to a collector.

A wine that may taste delicious at a couple of years old may not age well and it is crucial that any wine being purchased to collect must stand the taste, test of time. Collectors still need to be sure that the contents of the bottle are drinkable and not just a nice looking bottle, so that they can be sure their investment will continue to increase in value and make a reasonable profit should they decide to sell at a later date.

In more recent years, some of the newer wine growers have generated an almost cult status around them and an aura of mystique. This is partly fuelled by the fact that some of these newer growers will increase desirability of their wines through restricting the number of bottles produced in any single year to keep availability low and demand as high as possible.

If you're interested in taking up wine collecting there are plenty of places to get more information, but essentially make sure that you chose a wine that takes many years to mature and ideally a type that has wine-writers' and experts' good opinion. Do your research and find proper information from previous sales and auction houses to see what has been in demand and held its price.

Once research is finished and you've got the collecting bug, then the old adage of let the buyer beware is very true in the wine collecting arena. There are well publicised cases where fraudsters have bought cheaper wines and relabelled with those of a sought after and more expensive vintage or vineyard. However, properly researched and with the right facts before you, wine collecting can be a rewarding hobby in both hunting out that elusive bottle and over time, rewarding your investment as well.
