These Aren't Your Mother's Kitchen Aprons

The kitchen aprons of today are not the same aprons that adorned your mother or grandmother while baking apple pie back in the good old days. The aprons of today are made from newer stain and flame resistant fabrics, which means that they will look great and last so much longer than aprons of the past. Don't worry, though, if you like the look and style of those old-timey hostess aprons from back when the world was a simpler place, you can still capture that same look with printed retro aprons reminiscent of their predecessors.

Flashback to the days of avocado-colored kitchen walls and orange Formica countertops. Mother is working tirelessly to prepare a meal, always with a smile on her face. Father is due home from work at 5:30 sharp. Little Danny is out playing tiddly-winks in the back garden. Life has the appearance of being almost bizarrely copacetic, as if nothing in the world could ever go wrong. ... kitchen aprons would fit the bill. With their flattering, feminine cuts and cute, cheerful patterns, how could this not be an icon of a time when the American dream consisted of a detached, single-family home and 2.5 kids?

Not only do vintage aprons trigger a comforting sense of nostalgia, but they also are quite fashionable even in today's modern climate. And they are not just appealing because they're novelty items--they are actually still very cute in their own right and in many ways quite sexy. Also, one of the greatest things about retro kitchen aprons is that they serve as fantastic gifts. That's right--every time your sister goes to make her famous lasagna, she'll be thinking of you when she slips on one of those adorable vintage aprons you bought her for her birthday. Her husband will thank you, too. Trust me on that.

So why all this talk about aprons anyway? Well, I think that we live in a very complicated, uncertain, slightly unsettling time, and in light of that, we can't forget to celebrate the little things in life as much as possible. Something like a vintage apron not only puts a smile on your face, but it brings about recollection of a (seemingly) simpler, more carefree time, when it seemed that everyone had a predetermined role in a nuclear suburban family.
