In a battle for supremacy in the competitive car industry, there will be no shortage of pitting car brands against each other. It’s these things that make auto rivalries as thrilling as the game between the Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz in 1997. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but some don’t care about the competition and would just like to know the distinction between one model and another.

For this standoff, here is a look at two SUVs: the Nissan Rogue and the Subaru Tribeca. The Nissan Rogue was first released in 2007 to replace the X-Trail as the entry-level SUV for Nissan in the market. The Subaru Tribeca was first released in 2005, built on the Legacy platform and named after the neighborhood in New York City. Below is a closer look at each contender.

Engine: From the time of its debut, the Nissan Rogue has used the 2.5-L QR25DE inline-four engine which produces 170 horsepower. An inline engine means that the four cylinders of the Rogue are neatly lined up in a straight line, making repairs and maintenance easier. It also has a fuel consumption of 11.6 L/100km for city and 9.05 L/km for highway ...

The later versions of the Subaru Tribeca used the 3.6-L EZ36 flat-six engine which produces 256 horsepower. A flat engine means the pistons move in a horizontal plane, giving the engine a low center of gravity and efficiency in air cooling. The Tribeca has a fuel consumption of 14.7 L/100km for city and 11.2 L/100km for highway driving.

Transmission: The Nissan Rogue uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in which the transmission has no limit to the number of gears. This gives the Rogue an advantage over the 5-speed automatic transmission of the Subaru Tribeca. Yet, some people are still choosing the latter transmission present in some used Subaru Ottawa auto dealers are selling. Some say that the 5-speed format provides better fuel consumption.

Price: Affordability is arguably the most important aspect and deciding factor when choosing between the two. A used Nissan Rogue costs around $15,000 to $16,000 with taxes on top of that. For a used Subaru Ottawa like the Tribeca, it can cost around $18,000 to $20,000.
