In the distant past when Alexander of Macedonia approached the rich northern areas of Hindustan after overrunning the great land of Persia and bringing Darius to heel, he found himself up against brave and valiant kings and their fearless armies unwilling to cede even an inch of their territory. The most valiant among these kings was King Porus.

Somehow, Alexander and his invading army came to know about the Indian tradition of protecting one’s sister and the life of the sister’s husband if a Rakhi was tied to the brother. Alexander sent his fiancée to call on Porus and tie a Rakhi on his wrist. He also got her to pray to him to spare his life in the forthcoming battle. Legend has it that even when Alexander was in a vulnerable position in front of Porus, the latter spared his life since he did not want his ‘mooh boli’ sister - Alexander's fiancée – to become a widow as a result of his actions.

When Porus - who fought as per the laws and ethics of war, including respecting the promise that he had made to Alexander's fiancée when she tied a rakhi on his wrist – lost the battle and was brought before ...
... Alexander the Great, he asked Porus how he expected to be treated. King Puru memorably replied: “Like a King treats a King!” This demonstration of self-respect, pride and honour in a valiant adversary pleased Alexander so much that he returned Puru’s kingdom to him, called off his Indian invasion at the borders of Porus’ kingdom and also established diplomatic and cultural relations with India.

In the A.D. phase of Indian history, many Sikhs enthusiastically embraced the celebration of Rakhi and they celebrate the festival with as much fervor and gaiety as the Hindus in India to this day.

Sisters are excited at the dawn of the day of Rakhi when they get to celebrate the day with their beloved brothers and there is a lot of mutual pampering, exchange of Rakhi gifts and showering of good wishes, promises and blessings all around. Send Rakhi gifts to India if you live in another part of the country or world than your brother or sister to celebrate the beautiful festival of love.
