Both of my parents turn 50 next month. It is time for me, their little boy, to become a gift-giving man and step up to the challenge. After all, these are the people who raised me and bought me a million gifts over the course of my childhood. Now it is my quest to find them the best birthday gifts.

A birthday is the anniversary of the particular day on which a person was born. our birthday is a special time to celebrate the gifts.

What I've quickly found out is that buying 50th birthday gifts is a bigger challenge than I thought. Simply stated, my parents tend to like things that I do not. They grew up in a different time and their tastes are far more refined than mine. What you want and what you can afford are ...

Birthdays are celebrated in numerous cultures often with a gift and party. Naturally my mind went to wine, gardening and travel gifts. And all of these ideas would make great 50th birthday gifts. But none of them would be the best birthdays present ever! And that is my goal.

So I have changed my perspective and focused on three simple strategies:

1) Look for things they will use now... not later.

These are people who have saved their entire lives. They've worked hard and often delayed their own satisfaction for me and my siblings. I want them each to have 50th anniversary present that they will enjoy immediately.

2) Focus on personalization.

My parents have grown to love things that are engraved or that have their initials printed on them. To them, these are the best birthday gifts. Luckily there are many stores online that cater to personalization.

3) The best gifts are often the simplest.

As people get older they don't want to deal with complicated things. A new DVR, a fancy new iPhone or a gadget with a million buttons will only frustrate my parents. The best birthday gifts are the ones that create the least stress and can be used right out of the box.

The good news for me is that I will only have to shop for 50th birthday gifts once for my parents. And I intend to do everything I can to make the most of this opportunity and find them each the best birthday gifts ever. Parents going to love this.
