Kerala is a place where one can see green surroundings and Alleppey is a district of immense beauty in Kerala. It is famous as the backwater tourist centre. The place has got large number of inland canals. Alleppey has been one of the most important and busiest trade centres and has many famous ports including the Malabar coast. The place is also known for its prawn farming and coir carpet industries. Alleppey is known for being the headquarters for backwater tourism as well as for visits to the town of Kottayam which has so many churches. It also has the town of Aranmula which is famous for its historic Aranmula Snake Boat Race which is an annual event.

Alleppey apart from being the backwater tourism spot also serves as the host of the spectacular snake boat races which is held every year on the second Saturday of august. The event is exciting as the place is full of snake–boats, each boat is manned by over a hundred oarsmen, rowing over the water, cutting through the waters like wind. The event is a tremendous success with tourists and the local population as well.

This is one of the places of the world where farming is done below sea level. Another tourist spot is krishnapuram palace which is built by Marthanda Varma, it is at Karthikapally in Kayamkulam. In this 18-century museum you can see antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes.

There are various other tourist spots surrounding Alleppey. There is a place called Ambalapuzha,which has sreekrishna temple,which has the kerala style of architecture and is also known for the exceptional sweet milk porridge which is offered to the deity. Karumadikkuttan, a village which is just 3 kms away from Ambalapuzha, is famous for the old black granite statue of Buddha.

Alleppey also offers many other places which one should not miss. The green surrounding and peaceful environment of the serene place is commendable and to relax and to refresh body and mind, touring to Alleppey is worthy.
