In some time, Christine reveals that she owes her highly trained voice to the 'Angel of Music' who had been coaching her during the nights. Her teacher turns out to be the Phantom of the Opera, who is now in love with Christine. He hides behind a mask to hide his deformed face.

Raoul proposes to Christine and she accepts. This angers the Phantom to no end and he sets out to seek revenge. He captures Raoul and tells Christine that she can only save him if she agrees to marry him (the Phantom). She agrees but at the last minute, the dreaded Phantom has a change of heart and he sets Raoul free. Heartbroken and jilted, the Phantom simply disappears, never to return again.
