Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta is the capital city of the state of West Bengal and is an important place for trade. The city is also the third most populated metropolitan city in the whole country. It is also treated as the eight most populated city in the world. The city got its name from the village Kolkata which was the center point of the new city thus developed.

Background of city

Kolkata was never a famous place until the British people arrived in India, however, it has been proved through excavations that its neighboring areas were inhabited from about 2000 years ago. The British people made several permanent buildings which were used for military, administrative and civil purposes apart from many churches were also made in that time. The city was treated as the capital for the Indian nation until 1911 when finally British realized the importance of Delhi and shifted the capital to there.

Location of the city

The city is situated on the eastern bank of river Hoogli. It stretches about 6 kms in the east-west direction but is considerably huge in the North-South Direction. The city is thus divided in to three parts The northern city, The central city and the Southern city. The northern part is the historic portion of the city featuring all the composite villages (now became towns), the Central part was built by the British and the Southern part was developed by the independent Indian Government.

Climatic conditions


The climate conditions in the city are mostly warm throughout the year with the average temperature of around 22 degrees. The rainfall occurs throughout the year, however during June to September there is heavy rain. The best season to visit the city is the winter to spring season.
