While cheap travel options such as cheap airplane tickets and discount hotel rooms or cheap vacation packages often make vacations possible, they alone do not ensure that you will truly enjoy your time off.

The following are steps you can take to get the most out of your vacation:

• Shift out of work mode while away and stay away from your always growing to do lists. Turn your phone off an hour before bedtime. Do not look at it first thing in the morning. Simple deep breaths can help you become less hyped up.

• Change your relationship with your device, be it a computer, cell phone or both, and leave it in one place and refuse to carry it around all day. While some people can leave their devices at home, studies have shown that such actions provoke stress in others.

• Be prepared to endure boredom. Be ready to withdraw not only from your device but also from the constant need to be doing something. Sometimes the best way to get away is to partake in absorbing but low stakes activities, such as hiking, or snorkeling. It is not beneficial to put down your phone only to similarly ...
... immerse yourself in something else.

• Don’t take yourself so seriously that you assume that your workplace will fall to pieces during your absence.

• Keep your vacation expectations in check. Otherwise it is easy to put yourself in a funk that lasts for days over things such as a pool being a bit subpar.

• Remember sometimes less can feel like more and three day weekends that are tied into holidays can be a great time to go on a quick vacation. Three day weekends often result in less guilt, less anxiety and less manic intensity vs. preparing for a full week off.

• Avoid planning to do a “little work” while on vacation. Such intensions often lead to minimal productivity and an inability to relax while on vacation. Often there are tangible work benefits derived from vacations. Studies have shown that creativity incubates when people let their minds wander or do only mildly engaging mental tasks.

Disconnecting from the office can result in unexpected productivity. Working during a break does not simply interfere with a vacation, but often also prevents one from fully filling one’s creative tank before returning to work.

• Don’t be afraid of coming back from vacation because of all the emails you will face. Vacationers who keep up with email on vacation because they do not want to fall behind often never relax during their time off.
