When there is accumulation of fluid in body tissues, swelling is caused. This condition is known as edema. There are certain factors which can cause edema such as anemia, menstrual cycles, medications, immobility, weak veins, low protein level, liver disease, kidney disease, heart failure, malnutrition, starvation, pregnancy and thyroid disease. Some of the common symptoms of edema are inflammation, swelling, increased abdominal size, body aches, stiffness of joints, hypertension and fluctuation in weight.

There are several home remedies for edema, swelling, oedema which are simple to use and are quite safe to try at home without any risk of side effects. Some of the most popular home remedies for edema, swelling, oedema which are being used since a very long time and have proved to be quite effective in many cases are:

1. One of the simplest home remedies for edema, swelling, oedema is to take preventive measure. Avoid consumption of beef, animal protein, alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, fried foods, tobacco, white sugar, soy sauce, salt, olives, dried shellfish, gravies, ...
... white flour and pickles.

2. Horse chestnut is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Use of horse chestnut will reduce leakage of fluid from the capillaries as a result of which the overall circulatory health will improve. This is one of the most efficient home remedies for edema, swelling, oedema.

3. Try to minimize your daily intake of salt. Junk foods such as pizzas, hotdogs and burgers are known to have high salt content. Therefore consumption of such junk foods should be avoided.

4. Mustard oil can prove to be very effective in treating edema. All you need to do is take some mustard oil and heat till it becomes warm. Use this warm mustard oil to massage the affected region.

5. Turmeric is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and can be quite useful in treating edema, swelling, oedema. Just take some turmeric powder and sandalwood powder in equal quantities and mix them together to form a paste. Applying this paste on the affected area will give you good results.

6. Consume food products rich in protein such as eggs, white fish, turkey and skinless chicken. You can even try having cottage cheese, buttermilk, low fat yogurt and kefir.

7. Avoid sleeping during day and consume ripe papaya on regular basis for good results.

8. Doing exercise on regular basis will help in flushing out the water and reduce water retention. This is one of the efficient natural remedy for edema.

9. Drink lots of water on daily basis. This will help in diluting the urine and will make it easy for the kidneys to flush urine. But remember not to consume sodas, colas and juices as they may have salt content.

10. In order to prevent formation of fluid and to clear liver and kidney you can try consuming apple cider vinegar. All you have to do is take a glass filled with water and then mix apple cider vinegar (two teaspoons) in it. Drink this mixture on daily basis for better results.
