About a decade or so ago someone once described the internet as reading a magazine and going to your neighbor’s house to ask him to come over and flip to the next page for you. That was how slow, heavy and tedious the WWW was.

But so much has changed on the internet that you can barely recognize it from just a few years ago. As much as cars bring out a new model every four years with evolutionary changes, the internet goes on a facelift every year.

Just before the year ends, promising trends on web designs come out. Half the year has already been consumed. Let’s see what the standouts are:

Touchscreen

2010 was said to be the year of the tablet. Naturally web designs have been scrambling to create sites that are touch-friendly. With more and more versions of iPhone and iPad and almost every phone becoming Android-controlled, web design has created a different entity focusing on mobile site designs that have touch screen capacity.

Notice how netbooks’ prices are sliding further down. It just goes to show that it’s going the way of the dinosaur and mobile devices is the new frontier.

Also described as Responsive Web Design, this is simply web designs that are adaptable whether you apply it on a wide screen, flat panel, full HD capacity 32 inch monitor or a palm-sized iPhone or a 7inch Samsung Galaxy Tab.

This is the reason why some sites are categorized into mobile and the regular full site. The mobile sites are the scaled down versions of the full site to avoid overcrowding. But as Responsive Web Design is climbing up the trend ladder, so will web designs become more highly evolved that easily transforms from full screen to palm-sized.

WordPress

Forget Tumblr (leave them to the tweens), WordPress is still king when it comes to content management system or CMS. Still the preferred choice of bloggers and as a website, WordPress has recently come out with its 3.0 version with newer themes and fresh features like custom post and unique article images.

Downloaded 65 million times since it was released last December, WordPress has made itself easier to navigate, understand and is still the favorite son of reinvention.

Circles

For some strange, psychological reason, the circle shape has an attractive draw as a web design. Tests were done on which shape has the most eye-catching power and this round shape won it hands down. For this reason, most logos are circle-centric. This 2012, especially, it has been gaining rapid popularity in the web design industry.

Magazines Going Online

Not that we’re not feeling rather nostalgic to see the slow death of print, but trees are happy and it’s much more compact. No more bulky stacks we don’t know what to do with.

Magazines are reinventing themselves as well by moving to the online camp. It’s like shifting office and finally adapting the newest technology that has been ignored due to budget constrained. It’s a new era for media.

These are exciting times for the web design industry as so much are still unexplored territory. Something new is always coming up and it’s just fascinating to watch them go by like a parade.
