An advertising agency rolled out an unusual program at the annual South by Southwest tech conference in Austin, Texas. Folks who needed WiFi access could find it…if they could find a homeless person. The company hired people from a local shelter and gave them mobile WiFi hotspot devices and T-shirts that advertised the service. People wishing to connect could give the homeless person a donation (the suggested price was $2 for 15 minutes of Internet access). This is a creative approach to a problem, to be sure, but many wonder if it is an ethical one.

WHEN IT COMES TO ACCOUNTABILITY, STATES DON’T EARN VERY HIGH MARKS

When you think about the state where you live, do you think about government accountability and corruption? Probably not, but a new report from the Center for Public Integrity gave all 50 states a grade in these areas. The shocking news is that not a single state got an A. New Jersey got the highest grade, earning a B+. Eight states—Georgia, Maine, Michigan, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia, and Wyoming—failed. The study looked at existing anti-corruption laws in each state ...
... and then considered whether those laws are effectively enforced. New Jersey has strong ethics laws and apparently enforces them fairly well—though not well enough to earn that elusive A.

ROMNEY WINS BIG IN PUERTO RICO BUT DOES IT MEAN HE HAS BROAD LATINO SUPPORT?

No other candidate for the Republican nomination for the presidency came close to Mitt Romney when voters went to the polls in Puerto Rico. He collected all 20 available delegates, adding to his lead in the race. Romney said the win demonstrates that he has strong support among Latino voters, but that conclusion might not be entirely accurate. A national poll suggests just 14 percent of Latino voters would pick Romney over President Obama in the general election. Nevertheless, the win in Puerto Rico pushed Romney closer to the halfway point in his bid to collect 1,144 delegates and his party’s nomination.

Republican contests continue in the run-up to the party convention this summer. Romney won big in Illinois while Rick Santorum took the top spot in Louisiana.

HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT IN 2016? ONE SENATOR CERTAINLY HOPES SO

While the 2012 presidential election is still months away, one U.S. senator is already thinking about the 2016 election, and she has her candidate picked out. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat from New York, thinks former first lady and senator and current secretary of state Hillary Clinton should run for the highest office in the land. Gillibrand, who replaced Clinton in the Senate, believes Clinton’s time at the State Department has demonstrated her fitness for the presidency. Clinton competed against President Obama for the Democratic nomination in 2008 and has told State Department staffers she intends to step back from public life after this November’s election.

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE SAYS SOME OF HIS PEERS ARE…WELL…DUMB

John Boehner, Speaker of the House of Representative in the U.S. Congress, recently suggested something that many people have probably suspected for a long time: some people serving in Congress aren’t the brightest. The Ohio Republican suggested that there are kinds of people serving America as elected officials—including some who are among the smartest and some who are…not the smartest. Boehner didn’t name any names, so none of his peers can be angry with him—which goes some distance toward suggesting that he himself has a few smarts.
