Lancaster & Morecambe College Celebrates Star Volunteers
Staff, students and members of the community gathered last week at Lancaster & Morecambe College to celebrate the LMC Volunteers Scheme with an afternoon of music, magic and, more importantly, awards.
The Lancaster and Morecambe College Volunteers Scheme, which started in 2007, has been running the Volunteer Awards for four years. The award show recognises and celebrates all the fantastic volunteer work the students undertake at college and in the community. Awards included ‘Outstanding Contribution', ‘Community Volunteering' and Bronze, Silver & Gold awards for those who have completed up to 100 hours of community volunteering throughout the year.
Outstanding Contribution Awards are awarded to students who go the extra mile. 6 winners were decided from the 17 nominations received altogether from staff, students and local community organisations. Winners of the ‘Outstanding Contribution' award were; Dominic Hoyle, Ian Kirby, Lindsey Rodmell, Kat Mills, Lucy Gough and Sophie Dixon.
Kat Mills was also given ...
... a special award for her commitment to volunteering after totalling up 610 volunteer hours altogether since last September. Adele Burrow (Former) Student Liaison Officer said: "Kat is wonderful to work with. She has been a dedicated, reliable and enthusiastic student volunteer, who has continued to develop projects of great benefit to our student body. She has had a number of challenges along the way, but always keeps positive and gives so much to others and the college as a whole." Kat, who is moving on from College to study a degree in Games Animation at Teeside University in September, works alongside Student Services and has led the SU Executive team through chairing the meetings, putting together the agendas and setting up the attendance report. She has also supported other officers on their projects; and has done all of this whilst volunteering for The Health Action Group and FURCADIA.
Over 90 guests gathered to celebrate the achievements, including staff and students of the college. Flyde Coast YMCA and Lancashire County Council, who work closely with Lancaster and Morecambe College Volunteers, also came to show their appreciation. Entertainment was provided by student band, ‘Hissy Fit' and local magical talent, Dave Wilson.
David Wood, Principal of Lancaster and Morecambe College, said: "During the course of any one year, 1,500 students volunteer in the community, ranging from coaching at local schools and sports groups through to helping with community projects. This reflects my view that Further Education is, first and foremost, a community based service and it is through our communities' experience of this fine college that our reputation is defined. It is, therefore, our volunteers who are the real unsung heroes and the true architects of our reputation."
